A NEW BEGINNING

READ JOSHUA 5:1–6

Can you imagine wandering in the wilderness for forty years? It happened to Joshua. Then he became the leader of the Israelites after Moses died on Mount Nebo. Leading God’s chosen people into the Promised Land would be a challenge to Joshua, but God would provide for all his needs.

One of the first commands was to perform the rite of circumcision. This had been neglected during the years of wandering. When God made the original covenant with Abraham, He required that the males be circumcised. This was a way of setting His people apart from others.

Now, as Joshua prepared to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land, God commanded that the males be circumcised as a sign that he was renewing his covenant with his people.

At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again” (Joshua 5:2).

At salvation, you began a new life as well. Through “circumcision of the heart” (Romans 2:29), you can travel into God’s promise for your future!

Prayer Suggestion: Holy God, may my life be renewed in you.
