READ JOHN 13:1–11
During the course of a day, the human heart pumps approximately 2,000 gallons of blood through the body. Most know that the heart pumps blood to bring oxygen to the cells, but it also pumps waste back to the lungs to be removed from the body. Each breath out includes the heart’s participation in keeping the body clean. Jesus spoke of the importance being cleansed in another way:
“Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you” (John 13:10).
Jesus came to restore relationship between the Father and humankind. He purifies each human who believes in Him. Eleven of His disciples believed and were made clean. Having their hearts already purified, they needed only to be refreshed in Jesus’ presence. His washing their feet symbolized the removal of debris they picked up from the world in daily life. Their hearts remained clean, however, because Jesus had already cleaned out the impurities on the inside through His forgiveness of sin. Jesus continues to clean hearts today for all who accept Him and His cleansing work.
Thought for Today: Each heartbeat is a reminder of God’s purifying work in your life.
