DELIVERED BY THE SPIRIT

READ JUDGES 3:7–11

In this passage, sin brought severe consequences to God’s people. They quit worshipping God and began worshipping the idols of the land. As a result, the king of Aram defeated the nation and subjugated them to his rule. In this bondage they sought God’s help.

But when they cried out to the Lord, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, who saved them. The Spirit of the Lord came on him, so that he became Israel’s judge and went to war. The Lord gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him (Judges 3:9–10).

The Holy Spirit came upon Othniel and empowered him to deliver his nation from Aram. Israel then experienced forty years of peace after this deliverance.

People today can still find deliverance from bondage through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit draws people to Jesus so they can be set free from their sins and experience the new life found in Christ. The same power that freed Israel from its enemy is available to free people from sin today.

Challenge for Today: Trust the Holy Spirit’s power to deliver from sin.
