READ MATTHEW 5:1–12
“I’ve heard enough of your Jesus nonsense,” Eric growled. “Can’t you stop being a religious weirdo and just be my friend?”
“But this is friendship,” Todd explained. “If I was struggling to breathe, wouldn’t you want to help me? I’m only trying to give you spiritual CPR. Your soul’s dying, man. I just want to bring it to life.”
“I’ll tell you what’s dying,” Eric shouted. “Our friendship. I never want to talk to you again!”
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me” (Matthew 5:11).
Jesus knew He’d be crucified for speaking the truth about sin, righteousness, and the judgment to come. Nevertheless, He refused to remain silent. Similarly, God’s people need to speak the truth to the souls who are dying all around them. Sinners can only be brought to life and sanctified if they turn to Jesus.
In Eric’s case, five years after he walked away from his friend, he finally repented and surrendered to Christ.
