NOT FOR SALE

READ ACTS 8:14–24

Many people have gone to the mailbox and found a beautiful black envelope with the words, “exclusive offer.” Inside is an invitation to apply for a prestigious credit card that will allow them to buy whatever they want—and impress their friends! But is that how it really works?

Simon the Sorcerer was a wealthy individual. He made his money by impressing people. When he saw Peter lay his hands on people and those people received the Holy Spirit, he wanted to buy the ability to do the same thing. Simon’s attitude caused Peter to become furious.

Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!” (Acts 8:20).

Do not be impressed when God uses people to help others receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a gift from God. Those who aid others in this experience are simply servants of the God. If you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit, you can also be used to pray for others to receive the experience.

Thought for Today: A person cannot buy or sell the gifts of God.
