Balaam could have made a quick fortune. All he had to do was help the king and speak curses over Israel. However, Balaam encountered an angel of the Lord on the way to this meeting and knew very clearly that he must say only what God prompted him to say.

When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came on him (Numbers 24:2).

The Holy Spirit gave Balaam the words God wanted him to speak. It was not the message the king wanted to hear. Through the Holy Spirit, Balaam had the courage to speak even though it would mean he did not receive the reward the king had offered.

The Holy Spirit comes upon Christians today and helps them to proclaim God’s message. This can happen during casual conversations, in church services, and even in crisis situations. When the Holy Spirit comes upon someone, the message that He brings provides exactly the answer, direction, or encouragement that is needed.

Thought for Today: The Holy Spirit provides believers with the right message to proclaim at the right moment.
