THE TRUE TEST

READ MATTHEW 15:10–20

The five-second rule is a theory that suggests there is a defined window of time where it is permissible to pick up food after it has been dropped on the floor. Despite a few tests and studies, it carries no true weight in safety standards. It’s just a fun phrase for when the food is fumbled onto the floor.

The Pharisees were very interested in the law that described spiritually clean and unclean foods. They were judging people based on what they ate. They were holding people to a strict standard based on food consumption rather than heart condition. However, Jesus taught a new way to evaluate people—from the inside out.

“What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them” (Matthew 15:11).

Jesus is always more concerned with your heart and character than your outer cleanliness. What comes from an individual’s life is a true sign of what is in the heart. An unclean heart will result in an unclean spiritual life.

It is God’s desire that you allow Him to sanctify your life from the inside out.

Prayer Suggestion: Ask God to purify your heart and alert you to any sin that may be lurking in your life.
